Description of the project:
Processes involving fossil fuel conversion into energy conducted in power plants and thermal-electric power stations result in the production of great amounts of waste, collectively referred to as combustion by-products.
Fly ash, a kind of combustion by-product, is used in, but not limited to, building engineering – as a concrete additive; in highway engineering – to stabilise weak soil; in mining – for self-consolidating backfill materials.
Synthesising adsorbents (zeolites) and utilising them for CO2 sequestration can be an alternative way of processing fly ash.
Considering that coal combustion processes emit a great amount of CO2, utilising fly ash and/or zeolite produced from it to capture the CO2 constitutes one of the essential methods available to clean coal technologies.
This project will involve industrial and laboratory research concerning the mineral sequestration of CO2 in fly ash and zeolites produced from it. Post-sequestration products will be studied from the perspective of the possibility of their utilisation. The ultimate goal of the project is the minimisation of the influence that hard coal combustion processes have on the environment, as well as the environmental management of coal mines following their closure.
